The CMAA & the CMAA Diversity in Country Music Committee proudly supports IDAHOBIT DAY - Friday May 17 - The international day against LGBTQIA+ descrimination
‘One… But Many’ is an initiative by the CMAA’s Diversity in Country Music Committee. The CMAA is a committed ally in promoting and representing diversity - aiming to stamp out sexism, racism, descrimination, homophobia, ageism and bullying within the country music community.
An area we have been focused on is queer representation, including how we might have conversations so that we can better represent LGBTQIA+ artists, advocate for safer and more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ audiences and artists and speak against discrimination and abuse (especially in rural communities).
In consultation with Minus18 (Australia’s charity for queer young people across the country), the CMAA supports IDAHOBIT DAY on Friday 17th May and thanks the Country Music Community for standing together as part of this important campaign for inclusiveness.

What actions are the CMAA undertaking are part of this commitment?
The CMAA has established an inclusion subcommittee - the CMAA Diversity In Country Music Sub-Committee - so we can better represent LGBTQIA+ artists, advocate for safer and more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ audiences and artists, and speak against discrimination and abuse (especially in rural communities). CMAA would love to hear from you if you have any ideas about how we can help.
What does LGBTQIA+ stand for?
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual Queer/questioning Intersex Asexual, + other ways in which people might choose to identify their gender or sexual identity. We recognise that there are a range of ways that people might express their identity, and we respect the rights of individuals to use whatever terms work for them
Why the decision to say this now?
The CMAA has always represented LGBTQIA+ artists and audiences. We wanted to promote our allyship for IDAHOBIT because this is a day promoted in Australia by Minus18 – an organisation that targets making the world safer for young queer people. We are aware that young LGBTQIA+ people are particularly vulnerable, especially in rural communities, where they experience higher incidences of suicide and mental health challenges. We wanted to send out a message of support now, because some feel very alone and we hope that our country music community will gather around them to make them feel safer and heard.
What about other identities or communities that need this kind of visibility?
The CMAA Diversity In Country Music Sub-committee is exploring ways to support people who are subjected to harassment or discrimination because of their gender, sexuality, culture, race, age and/or ability. We would love to know how we can help, so if you’ve got ideas reach out.
